Cancer Survivorship: Treatment Strategies for the TCM Provider

This course will discuss the role of Chinese medicine in addressing the side-effects of chemo-radiation therapy and complications associated with statistically common cancers. Etiology, pathology, diagnosis, and treatment will be presented for both Chinese and conventional medical models. Strategies for cancer prevention and treatment of survivors will be covered.

Goals and objective:

    • Describe the origin and development of oncology theory in Chinese medicine.
    • Explain the etiology, pathology, and diagnosis of commonly seen cancers from a biomedical and Chinese medicine perspective.
    • Describe conventional interventions for the treatment and management of commonly seen cancers and side-effects of cancer treatment.
    • Identify appropriate treatment principles and methods in Chinese medicine for the symptoms of commonly seen cancers and side-effects of cancer treatment.
    • Effectively communicate to the patient and other members of the allied healthcare team about the supportive care role, including the risk and benefit of using Chinese medicine before, during, or after treatment for cancer.

More about the instructors:

Dr. Frank Butler, DACM is an internationally renowned scholar, clinician, and educator of Chinese Medicine. He is an expert in Orthopedics/Trauma Medicine and is one of the only modern-day physicians who has been educated through a traditional apprenticeship – a disciple of Ken Ark Fung Gong, disciple of Ou Young De Fei. Dr. Butler regularly mentors others in the profession on complex and difficult to treat cases, as well as lecturing all over the world on Chinese Medicine on orthopedics, acupuncture, and herbal medicine.

Dr. Kathy Taromina, DACM is a visionary in integrating Chinese medicine with conventional medical care in oncology. She has spent the last decade expanding the scope and breath of Chinese medicine and its role in cancer at the Integrative Therapies Program/Center for Comprehensive Wellness at Columbia University Medical Center. She is recognized as a Chinese Medicine expert in both Pediatric and Adult Oncology and Cancer Care Support.
