  • Internationally renowned scholar, clinician, and educator, Dr. Butler regularly mentors others in the profession on complex and difficult to treat cases, as well as lecturing all over the world on Chinese medicine orthopedics, acupuncture, and herbal medicine
  • An expert in Orthopedics/Trauma Medicine and difficult to treat cases, he has been in private practice in New York City since 1990
  • In addition to obtaining a Doctorate degree in Chinese Medicine in the US, he is one of the only modern-day physicians anywhere in the world that has been educated through a traditional apprenticeship – as a disciple of Ken Ark Fung Gong, a disciple of Ou Young De Fei

Dr. Frank Butler, DACM began his study and practice of Chinese medicine in 1990, completing a seven-year traditional apprenticeship with the internationally renowned Ken Ark Fun Gong (Kenny Gong).  Frank has studied internal medicine and medical massage with some of the most famous TCM masters of the 20th century, including Jiao Shu-de (Internal Medicine), Chen Rui-Chun (Shang Han Lun), Wu Bing-Cai (Wen Bing and Jing Gui Lao Ye), Hong Guang-Xiang (Respiratory Disorders), Wei Ja (Acupuncture), Wu Bo-Ping (Internal Medicine), Zang Fu-Ke (Tui Na).

Recognized as a leader in the field, international instructor and clinician, Dr. Butler’s extensive clinical experience spans globally to include many developing countries, as well as his uninterrupted clinical practice in Manhattan where he sees a broad patient base that includes orthopedic conditions as well as chronic, complex internal medicine cases. His clinical practice is informed by his mastery of several martial arts systems and meditation practice.

  • Graduate of the Finger Lakes School of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine in Seneca Falls, NY where he worked in the herbal dispensary and tended to the herbal garden during the entirety of his time there
  • In addition to private practice, his training includes extensive clinical experience from multiple locations including Seneca Falls Health Center, NYCC Campus Health Center, Rochester Outpatient Health Center, and Canandaigua Veterans Affairs Medical Center, as well as the Zhejiang Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese medicine in China.
  • An avid martial artist and nature enthusiast, he spends his free time cultivating his various practices and going on outdoor excursions

Here’s a brief explainer on the fancy letters and titles you’ll see at Evolve

DACM

DACM stands for Doctor of Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine and is one of the terminal degrees in the field of Chinese Medicine. Requires a minimum of 5 years of didactic and clinical education. Trained in Acupuncture, Herbology, Chinese medical theory, and Biomedical theory.

 

DAOM

DAOM stands for Doctor of Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine and is one of the terminal degrees in the field of Chinese Medicine. Requires a minimum of 5 years of didactic and clinical education, with an emphasis on research. Trained in Acupuncture, Herbology, Chinese medical theory, and Biomedical theory.

 

DAHM

DAHM stands for Doctor of Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine and is one of the terminal degrees in the field of Chinese Medicine. Requires a minimum of 5 years of didactic and clinical education, with an emphasis on research. Trained in Acupuncture, Herbology, Chinese medical theory, and Biomedical theory.

 

DC

DC stands for Doctor of Chiropractic and is the terminal degree for Chiropractic. Requires 4 years minimum of didactic and clinical education.

 

LAc

LAc stands for Licensed Acupuncturist, which is someone who is licensed to practice Acupuncture by a professional board. Board requirements vary from state to state, and in the state of New York, a Licensed Acupuncturist is required to have a minimum of a Masters degree in Acupuncture and does not have to be trained in Herbology.

 

MTCM, MTOM, MACM, MAOM

Different schools have adopted different acronyms, but they are all essentially Masters Degrees in Chinese Medicine/Oriental Medicine. Requires a minimum of 4 years of didactic and clinical education, and includes the study of Acupuncture, Herbology, Chinese medical theory, and Biomedical theory.

 

MAc

MAc stands for Masters in Acupuncture and is similar to other Masters degrees except that it does not include training in Herbology.

 

Dipl.OM

Dipl.OM stands for Diplomate in Oriental Medicine and indicates the completion of board certification in Oriental Medicine from the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine. Requires a minimum of a Masters Degree from an accredited school, and qualification exams in Acupuncture, Herbology, and Biomedicine.

 

Dipl.Ac

Dipl.AC stands for Diplomate in Acupuncture and indicates the completion of board certification in Acupuncture from the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine. Requires a minimum of a Masters Degree from an accredited school, and qualification exams in Acupuncture and Biomedicine, but not Herbology.
